Change of Pastoral Leadership Requires Patience, Charity, and Hope March 13, 2026

This past weekend we announced that Fr. Ralph Talbot will succeed me as the next pastor and rector of The Basilica this summer. Fr. Talbot has been a friend of mine since seminary and I think he is an excellent choice to lead The Basilica as I move to St. Thomas for my new role. Fr. Talbot is a good shepherd – a bright, talented, and compassionate priest who has an excellent reputation in the Archdiocese and in the parishes where he has served. Fr. Talbot is a trained lawyer who served as an Assistant State Attorney in Dade County, Florida prior to entering seminary. Fr. Talbot possesses a quick Irish wit, born of a sharp  mind and immense experience as a pastor. In addition, Fr. Talbot will bring other important gifts to The Basilica, including being an able and gifted fundraiser. Please know that Fr. Talbot, our staff, lay leaders, and I will be working hard on an effective and comprehensive transition plan.

In my February 20letter to The Basilica community, I communicated my great admiration for the Basilica community and my firm belief that The Basilica is set on a strong foundation for future growth and flourishing. My move to St. Thomas was indeed a surprise. I said at the Masses that Vice President for Mission role at St. Thomas is the only assignment that Archbishop Hebda would move me from The Basilica for. This fact was confirmed in a recent meeting with the Archbishop. I also communicated in my letter to the parish that I will continue the work of fundraising for the Basilica restoration and will attend weekly construction meetings until the work is complete. I will also remain on the Basilica Landmark board through June of 2027. I am hopeful that the above will provide important continuity during the transition at The Basilica. With hope and confidence, I look forward to the beauty of a restored Basilica church in the spring of 2027!

Transitions and change can be challenging – it can be a source of anxiety for some and for others can be a time of uncertainty. Change can also bring new hope and renewal for the future – a future that God has put before us. As we prepare to move from the main church to Calcutta Hall for Masses next month and as we prepare to welcome a new pastor this summer, I would ask that this time of transition be imbued with a spirit of prayer and openness. I have a sense of gratitude given that we are on the cusp of our comprehensive restoration – a generational undertaking. I am hopeful that this spirit of gratitude will overshadow the inconveniences and challenges of worshiping in a different space during the restoration. The change of space might actually be fun. Christian charity also requires us to be people of good faith and magnanimity – these virtues can also accompany us well during this time of transition.

May our loving and generous God accompany The Basilica at this time and into the future and may St. Mary, our patroness and friend, generously intercede on our behalf.
