The Basilica of Saint Mary is partnering with the Initiative on Restorative Justice and Healing (IRJH) at the University of St. Thomas School of Law to host a Workshop: An Introduction to Restorative Justice and Healing Circles.

The Basilica of Saint Mary, Lower Level of the Church

Restorative justice is an approach to justice that emphasizes living in right relationship and resonates deeply with Gospel values and Catholic social teaching. The Basilica is committed to grounding, growing in understanding, and living the principles of restorative justice.

This workshop will have three parts:

  • Part 1: Introduction, history, and foundations of Restorative Justice in the Catholic Church and Beyond
  • Part 2: Restorative Justice and Catholic Tradition, Applications of RJ
  • Part 3: Healing Circles—The circle process is a story-telling process. Every person has a story to tell, and every story has a lesson to offer. Learn the fundamentals of RJ Healing Circles and participate in the experience.

Speakers:

  • Fr. Daniel Griffith: In addition to his role as Pastor and Rector of The Basilica of Saint Mary, Father Daniel Griffith is the Founding Director of the Initiative on Restorative Justice and Healing (IRJH) at the University of St. Thomas School of Law
  • Julie Craven is a parishioner at The Basilica of Saint Mary and serves as Associate Director of IRJH.

Their work at the law school focuses on providing the tools of restorative practices in a course for upper-level law students and broader programming that addresses three focus areas: racial justice; institutional/leadership failures/ and societal polarization.
