Art Reception
Speakers will include Fr. Ivan Shkumbatyuk, pastor of St. Constantine Ukrainian Catholic Church in northeast Minneapolis, and its congregants Yana Pryakhina, who translates for wounded soldiers of the war in Ukraine, and Christina Jermihov, who works with The Basilica’s outreach program to help Ukrainian refugees.
East meets West in Ukraine, a nation at the historic continental divide where Europe confronts Russia and the Latin and Byzantine worlds collide and converge. This exhibition pays tribute to eight innovative women icon-makers of the Lviv School in Ukraine who have achieved recognition in a religious art genre traditionally dominated by men. Respectful of the theological and artistic canons of iconography, they experiment with different mediums, unusual painting techniques, and color palettes to create contemporary variations on time-honored themes.
