This event is presented by the Basilica’s St. Phoebe’s Footsteps: Supporting Catholic Women in Leadership. The group’s purpose is to provide activities and educational opportunities to support Catholic women in leadership and in developing women’s leadership skills for the Church.
Sr. Joan Mitchell, a Sister of Saint Joseph of Carondelet and expert on women leaders in the Bible, will use art, feminist bible scholarship, group process, and prayer to reclaim the significance of women in the gospels of Luke.
Saturday, March 22 in The Great Hall of The Basilica School Building
- 8:30 AM – Gather & Hospitality
- 9:00 – 11:00 AM – Program
Sr. Joan served for 35 years as general editor of the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies, catechesis for preschool through junior high, and established two gospel-centered periodicals Sunday by Sunday for adults and Spirit for teens. Her interest the gospels led her back to school in midlife to study theology, scripture, and faith development. A class with Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza on Gospel Women ignited a new life purpose: reclaiming women’s presence among Jesus’ disciples and working for a community of equals in the emerging synodal Church today. Sr. Joan holds a Masters in Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School and a Ph.D. from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN in New Testament (1993). Her study books for adults aim to patch together the gospels we hear in Sunday segments into whole narratives full of Easter theology to hand on and the voices of the women who were first to proclaim the good news.
