Planned Giving FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Not at all. Planned gifts come in all sizes and are often a percentage of an estate rather than a specific dollar amount. Many of our most meaningful legacy gifts are made by parishioners of modest means who simply want to make a lasting impact.
You don’t need to start with an attorney, but you will likely involve one to formalize your plans. We’re happy to have a confidential conversation first, provide sample language, and help you think through options before you meet with your advisor.
Common options include:
- Naming the Basilica in your will or trust
- Beneficiary designations (retirement accounts, life insurance)
- Gifts of appreciated assets
- Charitable gift annuities or trusts
We can help you explore what fits your situation and goals.
Yes. You may choose to support a specific ministry or allow your gift to be used where the need is greatest. We encourage a conversation to ensure your intentions can be honored in a lasting and meaningful way.
Absolutely. We respect your privacy. You may choose to remain anonymous or, if you wish, be recognized as part of a legacy society that celebrates those who have included The Basilica in their plans.
Your plans can evolve. Most planned gifts—especially those in wills or beneficiary designations—can be updated at any time. We encourage you to review your plans periodically.
Many planned gifts offer potential tax advantages for you or your estate. Because each situation is unique, we recommend speaking with your financial or legal advisor. We’re also happy to coordinate with them if helpful.
While not required, informing us allows us to:
- Thank you during your lifetime
- Ensure your intentions are clearly understood
- Welcome you into our Legacy Society (if desired)
You can share your plans confidentially with our Mission Advancement team.
Planned gifts are one of the most powerful ways to sustain The Basilica’s mission for future generations—supporting worship, outreach, sacred music, historic preservation, and care for those in need.
