As we continue to celebrate Easter, we’re reminded of a God who restores and uplifts. What an appropriate time to also celebrate Volunteer Appreciation Week (April 20-26), when we honor and thank the many Basilica volunteers who selflessly answer the call to serve others with their whole being – hands, feet, head, heart, and faith – and to spread Jesus’ message of love and compassion, helping to heal wounds and meet needs within our community and beyond. On April 26 and 27, 2025, at all Masses, volunteers are invited to receive a special blessing in thanksgiving for your ministry here at The Basilica.
Why I Volunteer at The Basilica
“The Basilica has been part of our lives for 34 years – it’s where we were married and where our family’s story began. Volunteering is just one way we can give back to a church community that’s meant so much to us.” – Peter and Jeanne Crain
“I volunteer at The Basilica because we as a family value community building. The Basilica is our church family, and volunteering also teaches our kids about service. Volunteering has given our family the opportunity to be a part of a wonderful community.” – Viveca Pinto and family
“I rejoined The Basilica of Saint Mary in the fall of 2019 after nearly forty years absence
and a wandering journey of faith. Father’s ‘Wherever you are on your faith journey…’ and others guided my way back home. Once home, volunteering was easy because so many Basilica programs piqued my interests: hospitality, Emmaus, Restorative Justice, mental health, St. Vincent de Paul packing events, and The Basilica Fund. Family and friends have asked how many volunteer jobs I have at The Basilica. Easy answer – NONE. No jobs! Only joys!” – Roger Sinclair
“To serve God, learn more things about life in the church, stand near the altar and see everyone in the pews, know other people at church, and make church friends.” – Gunnar Tangeman, age 15
“Volunteering together has brought our family closer to God. The Basilica has given us a place to serve with love and intention; it’s a big part of our lives. It’s where we’ve built friendships, grown in faith, and found real joy in helping out.” – Sheela Ponnusamy, Anto Chandar and family
“I volunteer at the Basilica of Saint Mary because I appreciate all it stands for—especially the dozens of truly important outreach efforts emanating from our St. Vincent de Paul Ministry. I enjoy helping at Masses as a Minister of Hospitality (usher) and sharing stories via the BASILICA magazine. And volunteering with our Hennepin Connections mentoring program has been rewarding beyond description. It’s an honor to be actively involved with The Basilica community!” – Rick Moore
