I always enjoy hearing what members of our community are looking forward to at The Basilica.
Couples will tell me how excited they are for their wedding and parents with young children tell me about a baptism they have coming up. Volunteers mention their favorite service ministries including Habitat for Humanity or St. Vincent de Paul.
The biggest event I’ve heard about recently is the return of the Basilica Block Party. There is excitement in the air as we count down the days to the big event. Along with thousands of new faces, we see our community members volunteering or just out enjoying the food and music. It’s a special connection to the event to know the backstory and what it means for our parish.
“I am thrilled about the artists we’re announcing for this year’s Block Party,” said Emily Grondahl, chair of the Basilica Block Party board, an all-volunteer organization. “Their diverse styles and powerful performances will surely make this event one to remember, uniting music lovers from all walks of life in a celebration of compassion and unity.”
For almost three decades the Basilica Block Party has been contributing to The Basilica of Saint Mary’s fundraising efforts. A portion of proceeds are directed to The Basilica Landmark to restore the church and campus buildings; and the St. Vincent de Paul program to help our neighbors in need.
Our community knows the importance of The Basilica Landmark and the St. Vincent de Paul program — and sees the impacts of their work each week. This year at the Block Party we will have messages on the big screens between the bands to help share the importance of this work with the concert attendees and wider community.
“The Basilica Block Party is a vital event for Minneapolis, bringing together the community in support of our charitable efforts,” said Fr. Daniel Griffith. “It showcases incredible musical talent while raising funds for important causes that help those in need.”
Basilica Block Party tickets are still available at basilicablockparty.org.
As we look ahead to the rest of the summer, there are many other opportunities to connect to the Basilica community. Join us for Sips and Noshes for the Assumption of Mary on Thursday, August 15, at 6:30pm, following the 5:30pm Mass. Come enjoy small bites and beverage sips. All are welcome and it’s free of charge.
